Accessories Maketh the Woman

The runways are silent, the lights have dimmed and the seats are empty. Jakarta Fashion Week 2010/2011 is officially over, but that doesn’t mean that the annual weeklong show won’t have a lasting impact on the country’s fashion industry for months to come. One prominent event during this year’s Fashion Week was the Lomba Perancang Aksesori (Accessories Design Competition). The competition was specifically designed to put hot, young talent in the spotlight while introducing a wide range of new accessory trends. Loaded with talent and amazing designs, this year’s contest, titled “Modern Urbanites,” more than accomplished both of these goals. Held on Nov. 6, the show featured creations from 15 finalists in the categories of custom jewelry, handbags and shoes. Things got underway in front of a standing room only crowd with the appearance of three models wearing black dresses and sparkling necklaces, bangles and earrings, all designed by Anindita Putri. The accessories, made from colorful acrylics, gave the models a fresh and playful air as they pranced down the runway. Anindita’s creations reflected trends seen at the biggest fashion shows around the world this year. “In the New York, Paris and London fashion weeks that I attended, I saw similar pieces making strong fashion statements. I think this type of jewelry will become a hot trend next year,” said Zornia Harisantoso, chairwoman of the competition jury and editor in chief of Grazia Indonesia fashion magazine.
