Designer handbags 101

More people are buying high-end handbags again as economic uncertainty wanes and consumer confidence grows. But that doesn't mean everyone's buying a new one each season; consumers are still shopping conservatively and trying to make their handbags last. Here's how to get a designer bag for less -- and take proper care of it. Right to the source: If you're hard on your belongings, or you measure longevity in decades instead of years, it may make the most sense for you to go right to the source and spend a little more up front. From Louis Vuitton to Coach Inc., specialty retailers always carry a variety of their own latest bags. Even better, some makers will repair their wares at little or no charge. But if you want to save up front, there are lots of options. Start online: Whichever bag you covet, start with a web search. At sites like Overstock, eBags and Bluefly, you'll find discounts starting at roughly 10 percent. Also try auction sites like eBay.com or propertyroom.com, which sells police property. Just be on the lookout for counterfeits, which are usually made from cheaper materials and with less sturdy hardware. Outlet stores are another option. Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke and Coach all have them. Off-price stores like T.J. Maxx are another good bet. That chain's website recently showed a Dooney & Bourke medium-sized jacquard fabric tote bag selling for $69, down from $195. But you may have to hit multiple locations or be ready to pounce on new stock if you have a specific item in mind. And there are always knockoffs from street sellers, and chains like Target offer bags "inspired by" popular styles, including satchel and hobo handbags for less than $20. Proper care: The best way to make your new bag last is to treat it well. Each week, empty it and shake it out upside down, then clean the lining with a lint roller, suggests George. Periodically clean the outside with a specialized solution, whether your bag is made of leather, suede or cloth. Check with the manufacturer for cleaning products it makes or recommends. For minor marks, a baby wipe might even work, while the largest stains demand a trip to a professional cleaner, says accessory and style expert Pamela Pekerman. Don't overload: Don't overstuff your bag because that stresses the straps. Keeping your bag clutter-free bag also helps prevent small items and the lining from getting stuck in a zipper. Try not to carry scissors or pens, and keep makeup in a separate pouch inside your purse. Never put your bag on the floor of a public bathroom or restaurant. Use bathroom stall hooks and chair backs. Or use a purse hook, typically $15 or less, to hang your bag from a restaurant table.

Academy Awards Red Carpet handbags are classic and clean

The 83rd annual Academy Awards red carpet has concluded for the night and the handbag trends from the event have just begun. Oscar nominees and celebrity guests paired their formal gowns with classic Judith Leiber crystal encrusted clutches as well as unexpected daytime clutch fabrications. Mila Kunis paired her Elie Saab gown with a Bottega Veneta box clutch; fusing her formal gown with a daytime clutch made from exotic crocodile. The fusion of a formal gown with a daytime clutch created an unexpected mix of fabrications on the red carpet. Helena Bonham Carter wore a Lulu Guinness, black and white fan clutch on the red carpet paired with her black Coleen Atwood gown. The whimsical Lulu Guinness fan clutch added dimension to her all black gown and was a key conversation piece for her ensemble. Jennifer Lawrence wore a Calvin Klein by Francisco Costa red column dress paired with a gold and silver, crystal encrusted clutch by Judith Leiber. The Judith Leiber clutch was a classic red carpet handbag that has been spotted in the hands of celebrities year after year. Jennifer Lawrence’s handbag was the standout piece of her ensemble. Hilary Swank paired a Roger Vivier Tube Barree clutch with her Gucci gown on the red carpet. The Roger Vivier Tube Barree clutch was silver with a plain silver metal, signature hallow square bit detail on the flap closure of the handbag. Roger Vivier has been making more appearance lately on the red carpet as Anne Hathaway wore one of his handbags for the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year, which was also worn on the red carpet by Natalie Portman. Natalie Portman appeared on the Academy Awards red carpet wearing the same style Roger Vivier bois de nuit clutch worn by Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globe awards. Natalie Portman paired the golden clutch with a Rodarte gown and Tiffany jewelry. The majority of the handbags which graced the red carpet tonight at the 83rd annual Academy Awards were crystal encrusted or metallic. A few leather handbags made it to the red carpet such as Mila Kunis and her Bottega Veneta clutch or Helena Bonham Carter and her Lulu Guinness fan clutch, but all in all, the red carpet handbags sparkled as bright as the stars that carried them.

Giorgio Armani handbags fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week

Giorgio Armani sent his fall 2011 collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today and it exuded elegant minimalism. The collection also included two distinct and quiet handbags; the clutch and the hobo. Giorgio Armani created several different styles of clutch for his fall 2011 collection. The clutches were shown in tiny sizes, small sizes and medium sizes with fabrications such as leather, python and velvet. Giorgio Armani paired formal velvet clutches with semi-formal attire and dressy attire that could be worn in the late afternoon or evening. The clutches were structured and not slouchy, giving them a more formal appearance appropriate for evening occasions. The velvet clutches also feature a flap closure and gold piping. Giorgio Armani also showed a daytime hobo bag on his Milan Fashion Week runway. The hobo was pink suede and featured a gold chain strap which could be worn on the shoulder, forearm or allow the bag to be handheld. The pink suede hobo was shown with an evening gown that featured a furry skirt. Although Giorgio Armani paired the hobo with evening attire, the handbag was casual and perfect for daytime attire.

Roberto Cavalli fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week handbags

Roberto Cavalli showed his fall 2011 collection during Milan fashion Week today and it was a stark move away from the highly embellished, lightly colored boho-chic collection he showed for spring 2011. The fall 2011 collection had an evening, dark night vibe that fused luxury and goth darkness together. Roberto Cavalli also created a handbag collection which was also more streamlined than in spring; focused on varying materials and creating an investment piece for the season. Roberto Cavalli’s fall 2011 collection included soft and luxurious fabrics such as sheer silk, velvet, short fur and long flowing hemlines. The fabrics were layered and thin with silhouettes long and flowing. The color palette was dark with black, deep burgundy, deep brown and metallic bronze as the dominant colors in the collection. The occasional light beige paired with burgundy and silver or gold tones appeared on the runway; but only in one to three garments. The main handbag on Roberto Cavalli’s fall 2011 runway for Milan Fashion Week was the small Lady Bag with a detachable shoulder strap. The handbag featured one top handle and either a flap closure or turn lock closure on top of the bag. The shoulder strap was detachable and allowed the satchel to hit at the hip bone. The handbag was shown once in vintage, deep brown leather as a large handbag; otherwise, the style was small and not much larger than the hip bone itself. Roberto Cavalli showed the Lady Bag in either exotic, solid colored leather or python. There were also two tone color combinations on the runway with brocade fabric or embroidery that one would find on a vintage knitting bag. The handbag was shown in black, deep brown, burgundy and golden fabrications. Soft and smooth leather was paired with embroidered fabric or python; adding texture to the bag. The Lady Bag on Roberto Cavalli’s fall 2011 runway is an easy investment in luxury for handbag fans. The handbag can fit into two trends at once; the long strap shoulder bag and the Lady Bag. The smaller size of the bag is also right on trend with the move towards a petite handbag.

Blumarine fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week handbags

Blumarine sent their fall 2011 collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today and it was full of bright and tonal ensembles. The vivid colors were shown together with shoes and handbags matching the fabric from the tops and skirts. The collection evoked a 1960’s and early 1970’s vibe, showing the fashion world that bright color is here to stay, at least through fall. The two distinct handbag styles on the Blumarine runway were a casual, east/west tote and a sassy shoulder bag. Both styles were shown in bright colors and fabrics to match the clothing line and blend into the entire look. The tote bag on the Blumarine runway featured two top handles and buckle details on the sides. The tote was small-medium and could easily be used for daytime activities and fit a wallet, camera, lipstick, keys and smart phone. The shoulder bag on Blumarine’s Milan Fashion Week runway featured a short strap and allowed the body of the bag to be tucked right under the armpit. The shoulder bag was reminiscent of the strap lengths from roughly ten years ago when the Fendi Baguette was tucked under the armpits of the fashion-savvy everywhere.

Donatella Versace sent her fall 2011 collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway yesterday and it gave Versace fans exactly what they were expecting; form fitting clothing that is anything but shy. Versace also created one distinct handbag for the fall collection, the soft and slouchy hobo bag. The Versace collection included many versions of the little black dress with one shoulder necklines, asymmetrical lines and body conscious styles. In addition to not-so-basic-black, bright colors such as purple, yellow and red graced the Versace runway. Donatella paired a slouchy and soft hobo with luxurious and structured garments, creating an easy luxury which could be worn during the day or early evening. The slouchy hobo featured small quilting and a gold pattern. The handle was short, allowing the hobo handbag to be worn on the forearm or handheld. The traditional Versace Lion anchored the strap to the handbag, giving the bag a distinct Versace look. The hobo was shown in both winter white and black with a golden pattern. There was black, solid colored, patent leather version on the runway too. The slouchy hobo was a fresh surprise on the Versace runway which traditionally features more structured and dressy handbags. The slouchy hobo was a an important trend on the spring 2011 runway, the appearance of the handbag on Versace’s fall runway showed the staying power of the style from spring into fall 2011.

How to buy and care for a designer handbag

More people are buying high-end handbags again as economic uncertainty wanes and consumer confidence grows. Here's how to get a designer bag for less and take proper care of it so it lasts. Bang for your buck If you're hard on your belongings, or you measure longevity in decades instead of years, it may make the most sense for you to spend a little more up front. Specialty retailers will often repair their wares at little or no charge. Michael Kors will repair a defect for free within the first year; Kate Spade will make free repairs for manufacturer defects within two years And Coach Inc. will make any needed repairs for a $20 shipping and handling charge for as long as you own one of its bags. Beauty and fashion expert Rebekah George advises knowing repair policies before you buy and holding onto receipts, just in case you ever have a problem. Whichever bag you covet, start with a Web search. At sites like Overstock, eBags and Bluefly, you'll find discounts starting at roughly 10 percent. Also try auction sites like eBay.com or propertyroom.com, which sells police property. Just be on the lookout for counterfeits.

Dolce & Gabbana sent a 1980’s inspired collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today and it brought back memories of Molly Ringwald movies, Devo and female power from a time when Supermodels ruled the runways. The handbags on the Dolce & Gabbana runway also brought back not so fond memories of the fanny pack, yes; the fanny pack made an appearance on the Dolce & Gabbana runway, as well as better received handbag styles. The fanny pack, which was mildly popular for a short time in the 1980’s, has become the handbag that no-one would like to admit is part of the handbag family. Although Louis Vuitton created a fanny pack for the status seeking set, the hands-free version of the handbag has stayed away from main-stream store shelves and the closets of Fashionistas everywhere. Dolce & Gabbana have done the unthinkable; they placed the fanny pack on their fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week runway. The fanny pack was shown in exotic skins with luxurious hardware and touches in on-trend colors such as black and bold purple. The fanny packs were loosely tied on the waists of models allowing the bag portion to hang about three inches below the top of the strap which seemed to catch on the opposite hip bone of the models. The fanny packs were shown with long dresses and more elegant styles; not the five years jeans, torn sweatshirt and old tennis shoes one would expect to see on a the owner of a fanny pack. In addition to bringing back a handbag style that most Fashionistas may shun, Dolce & Gabbana showed beautiful daytime clutches and shoulder bags in exotic skins as well as smooth leathers. The color palette was bright and the hardware was bold. The overall handbag collection for fall from Dolce & Gabbana was right on trend and every bit as luxurious as one would expect from the Itlian design duo; the fanny pack remains an enigma.

Yellowstone Imports Has Handbags, Sunglasses & More at Great Prices

It’s pretty much a given in the wholesale and retail business that extensive experience makes the difference between just surviving and actually thriving. So it’s no wonder that Yellowstone Imports is one of the most trusted and experienced wholesale distributors of handbags and accessories. Headquartered in New York City, Yellowstone has cultivated robust manufacturer relationships for more than 30 years with its suppliers, which translates into greater benefits for buyers. “We started off as a jewelry parts company, selling semiprecious stones as well as beads and parts of jewelry,” says Howard Huang, sales rep for the company. “We then started expanding into handbags, and from there just kept growing into the line we have today.” It’s a pretty impressive lineup by any standard. “We carry literally thousands of products, so many we can’t count them all; sunglasses, optical frames, jewelry displays, costume jewelry, hair ornaments, and, of course, our handbags,” Huang says. A quick visit to the company’s website at YellowstoneImports.com confirms that the inventory is indeed wide and deep. Broken down into various categories such as New Arrivals, Handbags and Wallets, Semiprecious Stones, Sunglasses and more, the site is easy to navigate and makes it easy for buyers to zero in on exactly what they’re looking for, without wasted clicks. Still, handbags are the company’s biggest seller and its mainstay in the business. “Right now our best seller is the Bosalina bag, known for its great quality and strong hardware,” Huang says. “It’s made out of a higher quality imitation leather and the hardware is rhodium plated, which is better than stainless steel as it’s shinier, more durable and doesn’t rust.” Hugely popular in the fashion industry right now, Bosalina bags wholesale for $15 to $20 each, depending on size and style, and can retail anywhere from $60 to $75 apiece. Another popular line at Yellowstone is the company’s Fashion Handbag Luggage: stylish bags in a larger size with two wheels and an extendable handle, suitable for use as a travel bag. One such model comes with double strap handles, an inner side zip pocket and two cell phone pockets. “This bag is so popular that we can only get limited amounts at a time,” Huang says. Yet clients don’t seem to mind if an item is out of stock sometimes, because they keep coming back. “Our business model is based upon providing quality service, expertise, and convenience to our clients,” Huang says. “We have our own overseas inspection service, guaranteeing the level of quality you expect, and eliminating the hassle of receiving a subpar shipment. Our sheer volume of business means that we can bargain for the items you need in bulk, even if you place a small order,” he adds. It’s through this system of checks and balances that the company is able to negotiate the lowest price possible, based partially on its long lasting and trusted manufacturer relationships.

Gianfranco Ferre fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week handbags

Gianfranco Ferre sent their fall 2011 collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today. Gianfranco Ferre’s collection was filled with winter white, quiet shimmer and classic investment pieces. The one handbag that made an impact on the Gianfranco Ferre, Milan Fashion Week runway was the structured exotic skin Lady Bag. The Lady Bag was an important handbag for fall 2010 and while it faded behind shoulder bags and clutches for spring 2011, it has come back with a vengeance for fall 2011. The Lady Bag is a term coined for a top handle toe or satchel which is, in general, a more structured and dressy style of handbag. The Lady Bag is considered a classic yet it currently enjoys “IT” bag status with the long strap shoulder bag. The Gianfranco Ferre Lady Bag was on the smaller side yet roomy enough for a wallet, keys, lipstick, smart phone and small camera. The silver hardware combined with the luxurious exotic skins allow for the Gianfranco Ferre Lady Bag to be worn for dressy occasions either during the day or one a warm summer night.

Saks Reports First Fourth-Quarter Profit in 3 Years on Handbags

Saks Inc., the New York-based luxury retail chain, reported its first fourth-quarter profit in three years as improved consumer confidence prompted customers to splurge on apparel and handbags again during the holiday season. Net income was $25 million, or 14 cents a share, in the three months ended Jan. 29, compared with a net loss of $4.61 million, or 3 cents, a year earlier, the retailer said in a statement today. Profit excluding store closings was 13 cents. Ten analysts estimated 8 cents on average in a Bloomberg survey. Luxury consumers increased spending during the holidays after stock markets improved and the U.S. economy recovered from the longest recession since the Great Depression. Saks said it saw rising demand for women’s and men’s clothes, purses and shoes. It forecast a mid-single digit increase in percentage terms in sales at stores open at least a year in 2011. Goldman Sachs analysts had predicted a low-to-mid single digit growth for comparable sales. The shares dropped 31 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $11.86 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, reversing a gain earlier in the day, as U.S. stock markets fell amid concern that rising energy costs will slow economic growth. Saks has advanced 11 percent this year. Fourth-quarter sales rose 6.8 percent to $866.3 million, Saks said, after gaining 4.3 percent in the third quarter and slumping 3.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009. Same-store sales increased 8.4 percent last quarter. Saks operates 47 Saks Fifth Avenue Stores and 57 Off 5th stores.

Bookkeeper jailed after stealing $891,000 to spend on designer handbags, luxury goods

A contract bookkeeper who stole $891,000 from her employer has been jailed for three years and nine months in the Victorian County Court. The Court found Duvelle Jeffrey, a 31-year-old mother of two, funnelled $891,000 from a group of direct sales companies called The Comunicom Group while employed as a contract bookkeeper between 2005 and 2009. Duvelle splurged the money on luxury goods and gambling debts racked up by her mother in Singapore. During a search of Jeffery’s former home in the suburb of East Doncaster police found designer items worth $150,000 to $200,000 including a Hermes handbag worth a staggering $49,000. Jeffrey told police she stole the money because her family needed cash and once she started she could not stop. Company director Kate McNab told AAP outside the court that Jeffrey had been able to hide her thieving by blaming other people for financial discrepancies and playing staff off against each other. Chief Judge Michael Rozenes said when a manager raised concerns about the dwindling amount of money in company bank accounts Jeffrey told him he needed to improve his business practices. "Theft from an employee whilst in a position of trust and over an extended period of time is a serious breach of duty and a serious offence," Rozenes said. "Your conduct was sophisticated and when you were confronted on several occasions you blatantly lied." Jeffry’s actions had a devastating effect on The Comunicom Group, with one company in the group, Powerhouse International, losing $204,000 and ultimately collapsing. McNab told reporters she had been forced to sell two investment properties to keep the business afloat. Jeffrey repaid $291,000 after selling her home and will serve at least two years in jail before being eligible for parole.

Duvelle Jeffrey jailed after spending stolen cash on bags

County Court Chief Judge Michael Rozenes told Duvelle Jeffrey she abused the trust of the victim companies and caused their directors stress, anxiety and depression. He said Jeffrey, a mother-of-two, weaved a "web of deceit" and tried to shift the blame for her thieving on to other innocent people. The 31-year-old was earning $3000 a week from companies in the Comunicom Group for contract bookkeeping services. One company, Powerhouse International, lost $204,000, and went under. "Theft from an employer whilst in a position of trust and over a period of time is a serious breach of duty and a serious offence,'' Chief Judge Rozenes said. Police who raided Jeffrey's East Doncaster home found stacked boxes containing more than 100 luxury items including handbags by Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Balenciaga, and Chanel shawls. One Hermes handbag was valued at $49,000. "`Once I started I just couldn't stop,'' Jeffrey told the police. Chief Judge Rozenes said Jeffrey claimed she gave $250,000 to her family in Singapore because her mother had a serious gambling addiction but this could not be verified. He set a maximum term of three years and nine months. Jeffrey now lives in a rented home in Point Cook and she previously pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft of sums ranging from $3544 to $414,000. Outside court Kate McNab, a director of Comunicom, said Jeffrey's crimes had a shattering effect on the group. Ms McNab revealed she had to sell two investment properties to keep the company afloat. "We had no idea what was going on. Even now I wake up and think she could not have done this to us,'' said Ms McNab. "She was very very clever and she always had a good excuse when we asked where the money was going.''

Holly Fulton fall 2011 handbags London Fashion Week

Holly Fulton presented her fall 2011 collection today on the London Fashion Week catwalk and it was filled with colorful prints, max-dresses, trouser pants, bright colors, mini-skirts and two distinct handbag designs; a small daytime clutch and a furry handbag. The daytime clutch on Holly Fulton’s catwalk was small and thin closure with a wristlet strap. The thin clutch may not fit a wallet since it was less than one inch thick. One could place flat cash, credit cards and a flat key inside the clutch, but not a lipstick or smart phone. Holly Fulton created the clutch in black patent leather which fit into the late 1960’s inspired vibe of the collection. The furry handbag on Holly Fulton’s London Fashion Week catwalk was medium in size and could easily fit a wallet, smart phone, lipstick and keys. There was one discreet handle and the frame was structured and rectangular. The fabrication was black fur and Fulton paired with daytime attire on the runway. Holly Fulton’s fall 2011 collection appeared appropriate for warm fall weather and would need the addition of a coat or sweater to take one into the colder winter months.

Burberry Prorsum handbags fall 2011 London Fashion Week

Burberry sent their fall winter 2011 2012 collection down the London Fashion Week catwalk today and it was filled with bright colors, plaid, colored hound’s-tooth, cow prints, winter white with black, military features, 1960s skirts, 1970s flare pants, cigarette pants, newsboy caps and four distinct handbag styles; two daytime clutches styles, the double top handle satchel and a large bowler. The squared, two-tone daytime clutch on the Burberry fall runway featured either nova-check with colored leather trim or two contrasting colors of leather. The clutch was designed with a flap closure and double buckle fastener. Burberry created the clutch in a medium size which can easily fit daily purse essentials and was wide enough to easily be carried without any fuss. The clutch also featured a detachable, cross body strap. Burberry’s second daytime clutch was featured in leather or wool. The leather version was done in one color and the wool version featured the same hound’s-tooth that was shown on pea-coats and overcoats. The clutch featured a straight edge bottom and round top with zipper closure and double tassel. The clutch was medium sized, just slightly smaller than the squared off clutch on the runway; by about an inch in the height and two inches in the width. The style was also shown in black patent leather with a dramatic winter white satin bow. The bowler featured on Burberry’s fall catwalk was large and could easily double as a small weekender. The top rounded out and there were two top handles. Burberry’s bowler was shown in solid colored leather or nova-check with colored leather trim. Burberry also took a nod to the continuing Lady Bag trend with a double top handle satchel, or small bowler, which was featured in brightly colored leather or nova-check with colored leather trim and a tassel. The satchel featured a square silhouette and was roomy enough for daily use. Burberry is also selling select items from today’s runway online, already! Bottom Line: Hints for handbags

More women are buying high-end handbags again as the economy improves. But that doesn't mean everyone's buying a new one each season; consumers are still shopping conservatively and trying to make their handbags last. Here's how to get a designer bag for less - and take proper care of it so it lasts. Bang for your buck: If you're hard on your belongings, or measure longevity in decades instead of years, it may make the most sense to go right to the source and spend a little more up front. From Louis Vuitton to Coach, specialty retailers always carry a variety of their own latest bags. Even better, some makers will repair their wares at little or no charge. Michael Kors will repair a defect for free within the first year. Coach will make any needed repairs for a $20 shipping and handling charge for as long as you own one of its bags or other Coach products, according to the company's website. Beauty and fashion expert Rebekah George advises knowing repair policies before you buy and holding on to receipts. Shopping alternatives: Whichever bag you covet, start with a web search. At sites like Overstock, eBags and Bluefly, you'll find discounts starting at roughly 10 percent. Try auction sites such as eBay.com. Just be on the lookout for counterfeits, usually made from cheaper materials and hardware. Outlet stores are another option. Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke and Coach all have them. But outlets usually don't have the newest styles or reliable quantities of anything popular. Off-price stores like T.J. Maxx are another good bet. That chain's website recently showed a Dooney & Bourke medium-sized jacquard fabric tote bag for $69, down from $195. But you may have to hit multiple locations or be ready to pounce on new stock as soon as it arrives. Care: The best way to make your new bag last is to treat it well. Each week, empty it and shake it out upside down, then clean the lining with a lint roller. Periodically clean the outside with a specialized solution, whether your bag is made of leather, suede or cloth. Check with the manufacturer for cleaning products it makes or recommends. For minor marks, a baby wipe might work, while the largest stains demand a trip to a professional cleaner.

Hillary Clinton: handbags are a 'uniter of women'

The US Secretary of State also posed for photographs for US Harper's Bazaar in her outfit of choice, a mannish trouser suit, in the department's Benjamin Franklin Room. Mrs Clinton took the hardest knock of her career when losing the Democratic nomination for president to Barack Obama, but she has, many say, flourished in the role of Secretary of State. "This is a non political job," she tells the magazine. "I'm not in the fray the way that I was, and that gives you a certain sort of safe haven, even though much of what I do is by nature difficult and in some quarters controversial." The article calls Mrs Clinton "as much a den mother as a diplomat" and describes how she took her shaken team to a local bar after Richard Holbrooke, the special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, died in December. In an unusual turn, she is frank about her fashion choices. "I do love a good handbag, " she says. "I think [accessories] could be either a great divider or uniter. I'm on the uniter side. I think no one should make fun of anyone else's handbag choices. "I have this Ferragamo hot-pink bag that I adore. My view was that I would carry it around only in spring, but it makes me so happy, I'm even now lugging it around in January. I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?"

Michael Barrymore and the eternal mystery of a woman's handbag

Hillary Clinton has been talking about her love of a good handbag. (Rather than a good handbagging, which is what Margaret Thatcher used to give her opponents.) She – Mrs Clinton – reckons they are a great uniter of women and that “no one should make fun of anyone else’s handbag choices”. Her favourite is a Ferragamo in hot pink. She thought she would only carry it in spring, but it made her so happy she uses it in winter, too. “I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?” How indeed. I suspect Sir Christopher Meyer, our former Ambassador to Washington, applied the same logic to his bright red socks. However grey your suit, how can you be unhappy if you know they’re down there? But the sock cannot be the proper equivalent of the handbag, because handbags are about much more than colour. For the young, they provide something to dance around at a disco; for the old, they are a useful weapon, as 71-year-old Ann Timson showed when she used hers on six jewellery thieves in Northampton. Handbags also signify what Freudians would call “the self”, which is why nightmares about losing them are apparently common. Perhaps this is also why buying new ones can become so addictive. A survey not long ago found that the average 30-year-old woman owns 21, and buys a new one every three months, adding up to 111 over a lifetime. The most desirable handbag in the world, I am reliably informed, is the Birkin made by Hermes. Victoria Beckham has 100 of them. The basic model costs about £5,000; the most expensive, studded with diamonds, is closer to £1,000,000. I doubt many men could identify one (it doesn’t have a logo), so it must be assumed that women buy them to impress other women. Only they are fluent in the language.

New York Fashion Week handbag trends from the runway for fall 2011

New York Fashion Week ended on Thursday, but the handbag trends from the runway are still fresh on the minds of the fashion world as the focus shifts to London Fashion Week. There were five dominant trends on the New York Fashion Week runways that handbag fans are watching closely to see if they continue into London, Milan and Paris fall collections; shades of red, tassels, small daytime clutches, top handle satchels (Lady Bag’s) and long shoulder straps. Red popped up on the runways of almost every designer during New York Fashion Week, such as MARC by Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren and Jason Wu. Red was shown in shades of bright cherry red, wine-red, Bordeaux and burgundy. Designers used red for smooth leather, satin, exotic skins and suede. Red was shown during Men’s fashion week in Paris and Milan last month, signaling that New York and Berlin are not the only fashion areas using the red for fall. The small daytime clutch, which was a large trend on the spring 2011 runways, continued on the fall 2011 runways in New York. The clutches were more structured on the fall runways than the spring runways, which was in line with the more structured garments shown by designers. The long shoulder strap continued from spring on the fall runways in New York as well. Marc Jacobs, Diesel and Milly by Michelle Smith showed shoulder bags with the long shoulder strap. The style works perfectly with the 1970’s trend on the runways and was shown with flap closures, also a style from the 1970’s. The Lady Bag, which was the “IT” bag for fall 2010 and took a small hiatus in spring 2011 is coming back with a vengeance for fall 2011. Almost every designer showed a version of the handbag with either one top handle or two. The top handle satchel or “Lady Bag,” was shown in casual and structured silhouettes showing the importance of the style for fall. Tassels once again graced the flap closures, straps and seams of handbags on the runways in New York for fall. Tassels came in all shapes and sizes and fit perfectly with the boho-chic trend and 1970’s trend shown in the collections. A few designers such as Marc Jacobs, took early 1900’s inspiration in the form of art deco and flapper style dresses. The tassels worked with on handbags paired with apparel from this era as well as the 1970’s vintage looks. It should be interesting to see what London, Paris and Milan bring the handbag fashion world. Will they continue with long shoulder straps? Will there be additional styles of top handle satchels or Lady Bags? Will the daytime time clutch continue? Will red pop out once again? Stay tuned as I cover the runways from London, Paris and Milan to find out!

Jasper Conran fall 2011 handbags London Fashion Week

Jasper Conran sent his fall 2011 collection down the London Fashion Week runway earlier today and it was filled with basic, dark winter colors and a splash of bold texture. Jasper Conran had one distinct handbag on the London Fashion Week catwalk which was right on trend and practical for everyday life; the Cross Body Messenger bag. The Cross Body Messenger Bag has been mildly popular for spring 2011 and is showing strength as the fashion world moves into fall 2011. The Cross Body Messenger Bag was spotted on the runways of New York Fashion Week and is continuing to be seen on London catwalks as London Fashion Week progresses. Jasper Conran’s Cross Body Messenger bag shown on the runway is black and roomy enough to be used for work or as a weekender. The cross body strap is thick, and when worn across the body, allows the messenger bag to fall right at the middle of the hip bone. Jasper Conran paired the suede, cross body bag with a 1960’s inspired black shorts jumpsuit worn with opaque black tights and suede, knee-high boots. In addition to the cross body messenger bag, Jasper Conrad showed a silver sequin evening bag on the catwalk which featured a small silver metal handle and glistened as the model walked. The evening bag was a fresh take on a formal classic and was small enough to be considered formal yet roomy enough to fit a small wallet, lipstick, smart phone and keys.

Hillary talks handbags in Harper's

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is glamming it up for the new Harper's Bazaar with a revealing interview in which she dishes about everything from her fondness for Grey's Anatomy to how her mother keeps her updated on Dancing with the Stars. However, considering that Harper's is a fashion glossy, the conversation turned to sartorial matters. "I do love a good handbag," she explains. "I think no one should make fun of anyone else's handbag choices." "I have this Ferragamo hot-pink bag that I adore. My view was that I would carry it around only in spring, but it makes me so happy, I'm even now lugging it around in January. I mean, how can you be unhappy if you pick up a big pink bag?" As for that infamous butterfly clip she used to pull up her tousled hair at the UN General Assembly in New York last fall that caused an outburst of heckling in the fashion press, Clinton says her critics need to give her a break. "It was a Sunday," she says, "a day of rest! I had actually lost track of time, to be honest, and I'd gone swimming, and then I realized I had to get moving, and I didn't have time to do anything else, so I really just did the best I could." "I didn't think it looked that bad, but ... what do I know?"

Kimora Lee Simmons wears Hermes Birkin to clean elementary school

Kimora Lee Simmons arrived at the Alain L. Locke Elementary School in Harlem this morning wearing a cobalt blue Hermes Birkin. The elementary school event Kimora Lee Simmons attended was the Make A Clean Difference campaign through Bounty. The campaign aims to raise awareness for the need to have a clean classroom. Bounty found that 71% of teachers are bringing their own cleaning supplies to school. The campaign is bringing to light the need for classroom cleaning supplies. Kimora Lee Simmons helped clean the school today with parent volunteers and will be helping Bounty raise awareness about the need for more cleaning supplies in the classroom. Kimora Lee Simmons Hermes Birkin is a classic, double top handle tote that not only fits right into the Lady Bag trend, which was a fall 2010 trend and looks to be a fall 2011, but the handbag also fits perfectly into the bright colored handbag trend. Cobalt blue is one of the more popular handbag colors for spring 2011 and it is an easier color to wear than orange or candy pink. Kimora Lee Simmons can easily pair her cobalt blue Hermes Birkin with any color combination and the color moves easily from casual, daytime wear to dressier office attire or special event attire. The Hermes Birkin, like the one Kimora Lee Simmons was spotted wearing today, can be found at Hermes Boutiques nationwide.

Designer Handbags Are Investments But You Can Still Get One for Less

More people are buying high-end handbags again as economic uncertainty wanes and consumer confidence grows. But that doesn't mean everyone's buying a new one each season; consumers are still shopping conservatively and trying to make their handbags last. Here's how to get a designer bag for less -- and take proper care of it so it lasts. BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: If you're hard on your belongings, or you measure longevity in decades instead of years, it may make the most sense for you to go right to the source and spend a little more up front. From Louis Vuitton to Coach Inc., specialty retailers always carry a variety of their own latest bags. Even better, some makers will repair their wares at little or no charge. Michael Kors will repair a defect for free within the first year; Kate Spade will make free repairs for manufacturer defects within two years. And Coach Inc. will make any needed repairs for a $20 shipping and handling charge for as long as you own one of its bags (and many other Coach products, according to the company's website). Beauty and fashion expert Rebekah George advises knowing repair policies before you buy and holding onto receipts, just in case you ever have a problem. But if you want to save up front there are lots of options.

Hermes Wants LVMH to Cut Stake to Free Up Shares in the Market, Puech Says

Hermes International SCA wants LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA to reduce its stake by more than half to free up shares on the open market, according to the head of the Birkin bag maker’s founding family. With the family controlling more than 70 percent of Hermes stock, “it’s not normal” that LVMH Chief Executive Officer Bernard Arnault should hold 20.2 percent of the shares, Bertrand Puech said in an interview in Paris yesterday. “We want him to reduce his stake to less than 10 percent.” LVMH won’t be a passive investor in Hermes and can provide its Paris-based competitor with strategic and operational help, Arnault said Feb. 4. The world’s largest luxury goods maker doesn’t plan to sell its Hermes stake, Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Guiony said at the time. If LVMH doesn’t reduce its stake, “it means we end up with a shareholder we don’t like and we don’t want,” Puech said. “Nothing will change” regarding the running of the company. LVMH announced Oct. 23 it held a 14.2 percent stake in Hermes and derivative instruments for another 2.9 percent that it has since exercised. LVMH acquired an additional 3.1 percent of the company in December. “There has been no contact” between the companies since Oct. 25 when Puech and Hermes Chief Executive Officer Patrick Thomas met Arnault and LVMH vice-chairman Pierre Gode, Puech said. “We’ve given no instruction to our advisers to meet with LVMH.”

SKETCHY ISSUES: INDITEX AND HERMES TAKE OPPOSITE SIDES ON DERIVATIVE ILLUSTRATION RIGHTS

Usage of photos found online is an oft debated issue: in 2007 there was the case of Flickr user Alison Chang, who found herself an unwitting model in a Virgin Mobile Australia advertising campaign; the Independent, a popular UK newspaper, ran into problems with Peter Zabulis when they failed to secure permission to feature a photo Zabulis took of snow. More recently, there’s the case of the Associated Press vs. Shepherd Fairey. Though the lawsuit was dropped in January of this year, plenty of issues remain surrounding the usage of photos in derivative works. Now, two of fashion’s largest companies find themselves facing questions over what constitutes inspiration and what constitutes copyright violation. Trending Topics, a blog from Spanish newspaper El Pais, reports (in Spanish) that Spanish retailing giant Inditex has once again used illustrations of fashion bloggers for a line of t-shirts without prior permission from the bloggers. In May 2010, Betty Autier of Le Blog de Betty noticed a t-shirt in Zara that featured an illustration bearing a striking resemblance to one of her photos. The only problem? Autier was never contacted by the illustrator or Zara about usage of the image. Michèle Krüsi is a 19-year-old blogger from Switzerland who, like many other bloggers, posts personal style photos to Lookbook.nu. Lookbook.nu serves as inspiration for plenty of personal style fans, including those at some of fashion’s largest brands. Someone from Stradivarius, a Spanish retailer also owned by Zara’s parent company Inditex, took inspiration from this image of Krüsi and created a t-shirt based on it.

Hermes sues small accessory company: Thursday Friday

Los Angeles is a funny city--both fashion-forward yet still so casual and beachy. A favored luxury brand that many Los Angelans prefer to carry include the classic luxe brand Hermes. And now you can have both! An Hermes Birkin and a casual beachy tote! Nonetheless, Hermes makes press headlines yet again. But this time this luxury leather brand is making press outside of their company takeover by LVMH and taking it to the courts over counterfeited goods. Mind you, this isn't any ordinary counterfeit lawsuit. Hermes is taking the accessories company Thursday Friday to court for selling canvas totes with images of the classic Hermes Birkin printed on them. According to Thursday Friday, "the Together Bag is a canvas tote perfect for groceries, gym clothes, books, and extras. Take it shopping, or bring it to work/school. Pair it with your handbag or use it in place of one – you can work it into any day look." Apparently consumers are smitten by this casual take on the Birkin. Available with brown, red and navy Birkin images, the Together Bag from Thursday Friday is flying off e-commerce shelves for a mere $35 and they're back ordered until March! The lawsuit paperwork states, "Hermes created, manufactures and sells the iconic 'Birkin' handbag. Through enormous sales, publicity and media attention, the appearance of the Birkin Bag has become immediately recognizable to millions of women. Defendant is selling cotton tote bags which bear on each of their surfaces, a color photograph of the corresponding surfaces of what appears to be a Birkin Bag, Defendant is simply riding on the reputation and recognition of the Birkin Bag to sell its otherwise generic tote bags. In so doing, Defendant is creating confusion among the public and is putting Plaintiff's reputation at risk."

Handbags at Dawn

Today, while walking past the local Waitrose, furiously conducting an internal debate over this evening's dinner options (is spagbol twice in a week too much?), I glanced in the window to spot a familiar face. She was looking a tad bedraggled with a hint of disorganised madwoman about her, and she was carrying a rather limp looking nylon handbag of the LeSportsac variety. Then I realised it was me. It strikes me that I am a long way (geographically, mentally and most evidently, sartorially) from the Birkin-toting self of yore. My footwear is a rotating cycle of UGGs/FitFlops/Mukluks/trainers, a good three inches lower than the de rigeur uniform of towering heels, scaling the corporate ladder. (Rosa Klebb dagger was optional, but useful, in disposing of the opposition, especially during bonus season.) Recent years have seen my arm candy of choice reduced to the hideous LeSportsac (which doubles as a nappy bag) and a wipe-clean PVC Cath Kidston number. Suddenly I am pining for my 2.55 (a.k.a. Chanel, for the handbag heathens out there), notwithstanding the fear of a small child defacing a bag worth more than a small car. I practically run home, almost mowing down a couple of pensioners in the process, sprint up the stairs to the attic where, gathering dust, resides a box marked 'handbags'. Tearing it open, I discover they are nestled alongside two other long lost friends I haven't seen in far too long: freedom and independence. So I have vowed to sling on an impractical but beautiful bag and strap on some killer heels the next time I am not doing the nursery run, performing a supermarket sweep, or chasing children round a playground. As for my dear friends, freedom and independence, they have been lovingly laid back to rest in the attic for another few years.

Kate Spade presented her fall 2011 collection this morning during New York Fashion Week and it was black, white and red all over. Kate Spade combined classic black and white ensembles with eye popping accessories of red shoes and red handbags. Red is one of the more prominent colors that have been found thus far on the fall runways in New York and Berlin, as well as in the men’s shows in Paris and Milan earlier this year. Kate Spade, who rose to fashion fame in the mid-1990’s with her shopper tote, created a combination of classic and serious handbags as well as avant-garde pieces. The handbag styles Kate Spade presented included shoulder bags, whimsical clutches and the famed Lady Bag. In addition to red, Spade’s handbag collection was done in black, gray, magenta and beige. Kate Spade created a medium sized shoulder bag for her fall 2011 collection which included a large bow; a spring trend which is carrying into fall. The shoulder bag featured a flap closure, shoulder strap which allowed the body of the bag to hit the model mid-hip and crocodile stamped leather. The shoulder bag was featured in red and black. There was also a whimsical keyboard clutch in Kate Spade’s collection which was long and featured a small keyboard for spontaneous musical breakouts while out on the town. (Please note, keyboard does not actually play music.) The Lady Bag made a large appearance on Kate Spade’s presentation floor. The top handle satchel featured one top handle and a flap closure. The Lady Bag was large and done in solid black tweed giving the handbag a vintage and classic vibe.

MARC by Marc Jacobs handbags fall 2011 New York Fashion Week

MARC by Marc Jacobs sent his fall 2011 collection down the New York Fashion Week runway today and it evoked a vintage, 1970s vibe with earth tone colors, burnt orange, golden tones and a touch of wine. MARC by Marc Jacobs also featured several handbags on the fall runway. The collection included the daytime clutch, Lady Bag and a short strap shoulder bag. While other designers are creating long shoulder straps for their handbags, Marc Jacobs designed a short shoulder strap for his MARC by Marc Jacobs’s line. The shoulder bag tucked nicely under the model’s armpit in a throwback silhouette from roughly ten years ago. In addition to the shoulder bag, Marc Jacobs created a multi-tone hobo for the runway which was casual and roomy; perfect for weekend day trips. The hobo bag featured a shoulder strap which allowed the bag to hit at the waist. Marc Jacobs also included the daytime clutch in his MARC by Marc Jacobs fall collection. The clutch shown on the runway was burnt orange which blended well with the golden and earth toned colors of the collection. The daytime clutch was squared and made from stiff yet smooth leather. The Lady Bag made an appearance on the MARC by Marc Jacobs’s runway in a brick red tone with two top handles and a detachable shoulder strap.

Michael Kors fall 2011 New York Fashion Week handbags

Michael Kors sent his fall 2011 handbag collection down the New York Fashion Week runway this morning and it was filled with classic lines, minimalism silhouettes and two distinct handbag styles; the daytime clutch and the cross body bag. The daytime clutch on Michael Kors fall 2011 runway was created in structured leather and structured exotic leather. The clutch was medium in size and featured a flap closure, making it easy to wear on a daily basis. The structured silhouette lent the clutches to be appropriate for office attire and dressier ensembles. The cross body bag from Michael Kors fall collection was done in luxurious and over-the-top fur. The fur bag paired with simple, office appropriate attire, making the handbag a statement piece. The cross body bag appeared larger than it really was on the runway due to the furry nature of the bag. Kors cross body bag is roughly medium in size and can easily fit daily purse essentials as well as gloves and file folder. Michael Kors handbag collection for fall appeared on the runway to have the same, high quality and classic construction Michael Kors fans have grown accustomed to. The cross body fur bag was a bit of a surprise.

In the bag

The Banane Taipei started as a sassy take on the craze for designer bags, but over the past nine months, the NT$1,480 canvas tote has garnered its own celebrity following, cult status and a waiting list. Printed with an image of a satchel that resembles the Hermes Birkin bag, the Banane Taipei seems to parody status bags. Its creators insist, however, that it is meant as an affectionate tribute. The tote was created as the first product of Banana International (嬌蕉國際), a fledgling lifestyle brand that plans to manufacture all its products in small Taiwanese factories. “We’re honoring a classic while promoting the idea of environmental responsibility,” says Chu Yun-kuang (朱韻光), marketing director for the Banane Taipei. The four sides of the bag, which was created as a reusable shopping tote, are printed with images of a leather satchel to create a trompe l’oeil effect. (While the satchel resembles a Hermes Birkin, Chu says it is actually a photo composite of other bags and leather textures.) The result is an image so realistic that you want to reach out and touch the gold buckle to make sure it isn’t three-dimensional. After its release in April, the Banane Taipei quickly gained in popularity when paparazzi photographed talk show host Dee Hsu (徐熙娣, aka Little S) carrying an orange version. Mentions on English-language style blogs helped it gain an international customer base. At its peak, the bag’s waiting list was four months. A sale at the company’s office in Da-an District last month resulted in a long line snaking out the door; Chu estimates that 200 customers came to purchase bags.

Anti-status, status bag

DON’T we love life’s sweetest and sharpest irony? The ultimate status bag circulating in highest society remains the Birkin by Hermes, which once had a waiting list of three years. Yes of course the Together Bag is a blatant, shameless knock-off that takes one second for any designer bag owner to realise this is not the real thing. The increasingly-famous Together Bag. True, the Together Bag has the Birkin printed on both sides, sideways and even on the bottom but it is only a carry-all. Many are titillated by the combination of humour on a banal shopping bag that has reduced the world’s most exclusive and expensive bag into a cheeky carry-all. The fashion world is agog with the blurring of boundary between elitism and democracy. After all, the great and frightfully exalted Karl Lagerfeld, creative director for Chanel, has done a collection for ultra-mass market Macy’s and even had the audacity to declare “it is my duty to do a line for Macy’s”. Ditto for Lanvin and Jimmy Choo, which have also done a capsule collection for department store H&M. Popular as it is, H&M is still a chain store for the heaving masses. Bizarrely the Together bag is a hit among the rich and famous who already have designer bags by the shelf-full. However decadent and depraved, chances are you will not use your Hermes Birkin to carry your groceries, soiled gym clothes, dirty laundry, heavy books or bits and pieces that you accumulate in the course of a day. Most will use a cotton tote or, worse, plastic bags as leather ones can stretch and lose their shape when over-loaded. This was what happened to Thursday Friday’s founders Roni Brunn and Olena Sholomytska who, like most of us, would not dream of stuffing heavy, wet or rough-edged objects into their pricey bag. In an email interview, Roni Brunn explains: “Olena and I met in Stockholm. I was running the Indie pop band From and she was an IT consultant. We hit it off and decided to be business partners as we shared similar tastes and ideas.”

Victoria Silvstedt wears Hermes Birken to Lexington Show Stockholm Fashion Week

Victoria Silvstedt was spotted earlier today at the Lexington Show during Stockholm Fashion Week in Sweden wearing a classic black Hermes Birkin. The Hermes Birkin is a favorite among celebrities as it is a classic top handle tote which is easy to wear with dressy or casual attire. The Hermes Birken is also a status symbol which is not as easily obtained by the public as handbags by Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. Victoria Silvstedt is a Swedish model and actress who got her starts as a contestant in the Miss Sweden beauty pageant and represented her country in the 1993 Miss World pageant finishing in the top ten. She has modeled for designers such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani and Valentino and appeared in Glamour, Maxim and Vanity Fair. In the 1990’s Victoria Silvstedt landed the lucrative Guess modeling contract where she appeared in numerous print ads for the brand. Victoria Silvstedt also rose to fame after she posed for Playboy and became Playmate of the Month in December 1996. Victoria Silvstedt has since been working as an actress and spokesmodel for television, movie and off Broadway shows. Victoria Silvstedt is also a mainstay on the fashion week circuit being spotted at many designer shows throughout the world every season. The Hermes Birkin is a double top handle tote which is favored by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Janet Jackson, Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe. Hermes has a waiting list for the Birkin which averages eighteen months depending upon color and fabrication desired despite the hefty price tag of over $10,000. Inspired by Jane Birkin in the 1960’s, the Hermes Birkin offers clean and classic lines which have helped to make it the iconic handbag that it is today.

Charity needs bags of help with its auction

A LICHFIELD charity which offers refuge to women escaping abusive relationships is appealing for donations of handbags for its fund-raising auction. The Pathway Project is planning the event for June and hoping the district's women will show their support both by donating handbags and attending. "We need good quality designer handbags, or indeed brands such as Radley or Fiorelli, that we can sell at the auction," said manager Jan White. "Bags from River Island or Next in good condition would also be great. "If we get a really classy designer bag to auction – Gucci for example – we will put a reserve price on it." As well as providing accommodation, Pathway helps women get on with their lives. "We do self-help groups not only in refuges but in the community as well," said Jan. "These include life skills such as budgeting, things that women may have been excluded from by their former partners. When you have been called stupid for years, you start to believe it. "These activities help to build self-esteem," said Jan. Pathway Project is only part-funded by the Government – it has to raise money to deliver its services which are managed at The Hope Centre at 71-73 Upper St John Street. "We run a 24-hour helpline service which women can call," said Jan. "We can get them out of situations very quickly. "Some women flee in the middle of the night – they pick up their kids and arrive in pyjamas. "Money raised at the auction will help buy food and clothes for them – funds are vital to the work we do." The Pathway Project is asking for handbags to be dropped at the Hope Centre. Alternatively call Jan on 07870 283032 and she will arrange for them to be picked up. "We are also accepting accessories – old jewellery, scarves and belts that we can sell," said Jan. Further details about the handbag auction will be published in the Mercury.

Counterfeit Detergent: Now, You Really Have Heard Everything!

But whoever would have thought that fake laundry soap, (Tide detergent, to be specific) would be a big seller anywhere? Last September in Seattle, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized 5,000 boxes of the counterfeit laundry detergent from a ship that had arrived from China. It is estimated that shipment would have generated a $4,000 profit, which may not seem like a lot for pirated goods, but ever little piece of booty is ill-gotten and adds up. “A detergent does seem a little weird, but you have to understand that it’s 300 or 400 percent profit. The fakes could have ended up in mom-and-pop groceries or maybe some outdoor market…the counterfeit detergents were found because the technicians saw something in the import manifest on their computers that caught their attention,” says Judy Staudt, supervisory import specialist with the CBP. The CBP now is the largest law enforcement agency in the country, with about 58,000 employees. Nationwide, 95 percent of overseas cargo moves through Seattle’s ports and it comes in a million 40-foot metal containers, all of which have to be inspected. Counterfeiting costs American businesses $200 billion to $250 billion annually, according to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition and oddly enough, the same techniques employed to search for terrorist weapons after 9/11 (detecting radiation through transported containers via a portal monitor) also detect counterfeit detergent. When a sampling of the detergent boxes was opened, agents noticed that all the boxes had the label “Made in USA”. Each box also listed the weight in kilograms, not pounds, using a comma as in “3,6 kg,” which is how weights are listed in many countries. In America, however, it would read “3.6.” From a distance, the color printing looks much like the original, but a closer look reveals a fuzziness, such as that which occurs when one takes a picture of a picture, which is exactly what happened in this case. The boxes of detergent are now stored in a warehouse and will remain there until the investigation is finished. The shipment may well end up in a landfill.

Gucci and Christie’s: A One-of-a-Kind Match

It was a mix of two pleasures that drew the fashion crowd into Gucci‘s Madison Avenue store last night; the combined launch of Gucci’s made-to-order Bamboo bag and a preview of works that will be up for auction March 10 at Christie’s Contemporary Art Sale. The store was filled with a mix of art, cocktails and luxurious leather goods with guests enjoying the teeniest of hor d’oeuvres. A Mark Rothko was perched between vintage Gucci handbags, and a whole wall was dedicated to the classic bamboo Gucci bag. The bag is available in three sizes, and is now available made to order in any color, texture and finish (be that plain or patent) crocodile leather that you so desire. You can also choose your own hardware and have your initial’s hand stamped on the inside of the bag. With the largest bag starting at $17,000, one of the extra-special touches is a letter from creative director Frida Giannini herself half way through the process. The bamboo used to make the handle is shaped over fire, which gives it that delicious burnished finish, and was first used in World War II when other more luxurious materials were harder to find. And as necessity is the mother of invention, so the classic handle was made. Although it was hard trying to keep my distance from stunning artworks that I couldn’t afford–the pieces start at $60,000–it was harder still to stop envisioning myself with my own made-to-order black patent croc bamboo bag with gold hardware. Barneys’s New Chief Explains Those Changes

“I’m a worker, not so much a talker,” Mark Lee, the chief executive of Barneys New York, said Friday morning, explaining his reluctance these last few months to publicly discuss his makeover plans for the store. Mr. Lee, the former chief executive of Gucci, arrived at Barneys in September. Still, his changes have been hard to miss. They include the dismissal in December of Barneys stalwarts Judy Collinson and Julie Gilhart and the hiring of Daniella Vitale, a former Gucci colleague of Mr. Lee’s, as chief merchant and executive vice president; and the somewhat unconventional choices of Dennis Freedman as creative director — responsible for windows and visual displays, among other things — and Amanda Brooks as fashion director. Mr. Freedman is best known for his work at W magazine, while Ms. Brooks, a onetime Vogue editor, was fashion director at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment. As it turned out, Mr. Lee had a lot to say over breakfast with a few journalists. Joining him were Ms. Vitale, Mr. Freedman and Tom Kalendarian, the chief merchant for men’s fashion. Mr. Lee stressed that his mission for the luxury retailer was to make it surprising and dynamic. “But,” he added, “there’s never going to be a day when we say ‘ta-da’ and drop the curtain.” The changes will be a work-in-progress over the next few years, he said. The most obvious will be the renovation of the main floor of the Madison Avenue store, which will be completed in early 2012. There will also be changes on the Co-Op floors; the men’s Co-Op will move to the eighth floor and connect to the women’s side. Mr. Lee declined to elaborate on the redesign since an architect has not been announced. The Beverly Hills store will also be updated, but Mr. Lee did not expect changes at newer Barneys locations. (He also said that no flagship stores would be closed.) A new advertising campaign will start this Sunday, called “Backstage” and based on images taken during the last round of shows in New York and Europe by photographers like William Klein, Nan Goldin and Juergen Teller. Mr. Lee said he recalled the graphic sharpness of some of Barneys’s early campaigns — indeed, from a time before newspapers switched to color — and the backstage pictures were a way to do something visually interesting during a transition period. On Monday, the store will add “The Window” to Barneys.com, with news about what’s happening at Barneys and its vendors.

Shopping for ladies’ handbag

There is one accessory that many women cannot do without - a handbag. In fact, they consider it a necessity. That explains why there is a hot demand for ladies’ handbags in the market. From the designer ones to the ‘no names’; from brand new to fairly used! Every woman has her own sense of style and taste. Therefore, she will tend to buy ladies’ handbags that reflect that. For some women, they only buy designers ladies’ handbags, which are crafted from the finest materials and carry the names of some of the most celebrated designers in the world. Names like Gucci, Escada, Versace, channel, Fendi, Calvin Klein, Dolce and Garbana, Givenchy, Next, Esprit, prada, among others, top the list. Designer ladies handbags are quite expensive but this class of women views them as fashion statement, portraying their class or high taste. They visit some specialty boutiques in choice places to purchase them. Another purchase venue is online retailing. There are many websites that sell brand name designer ladies handbags and will deliver right to your door .This often allows the customer the biggest selection and a chance to compare prices. But it is important to be careful when buying this way because of fear of imitations from China/Thailand. Visiting your local boutiques and departmental stores is a wonderful idea to find less -expensive ones. Most of these stores do not cater for women who are looking for a pricey handbag. Instead, they have a varied selection of reasonably priced but attractive ladies handbags, imported from Dubai and Asia and branded in these known designer names (imitation/ replica). One of the most popular types of ladies handbags are those crafted from leather. Leather handbags are available in several shades of colours .But many women prefer a neutral shade such as black or brown. And if you are looking for something unusual, then you must opt for one that is red, blue or yellow. A handbag in a bright colour is a great fashion accessory in the spring or summer. As there are many colours of ladies handbags, there are as many styles as you can get- over the shoulder design, small clutches or even a few that can double as briefcase. Many of these handbags have detachable handle which give it versatile look. The size of ladies handbag is really dependent on your individual preference. It is over - powering for a petit woman to carry a handbag that is oversized. She would want to choose one that is relative to her size. The same applies for a taller/fat woman, when she is browsing for a handbag. A bigger size will compliment her body frame better.

Fake branded bags seized from Worli mall

The Worli police raided three high-profile stores at a plush mall in central Mumbai and seized duplicate bags and accessories worth more than Rs70 lakh bearing the tag of Louis Vuitton. Investigators said that these products were then sold as original to the customers. Three people have been arrested in the case so far. According to an estimate, branded companies and the government (by way of tax evasion) in India lose hundreds of crores annually due to duplicate products sold in the market. Police records show that based on a tip-off from an anti-piracy agency, the raids were conducted on shop number 157, 159, and 163, which are located inside the mall. On inspection, investigators found duplicate handbags, trolley bags, luggage bags, wallets, cufflinks, belts, key chains, card holders, and sunglasses bearing Louis Vuitton’s tag. “The fake are so craftily made that it is difficult to distinguish them from the original. Only an experienced eye could have identified the difference,” said an officer. Officials said that they are in the process of investigating from where these products were brought to the store. “We are also trying to trace other boutiques and stores, which sell fake products of reputed brands,” added the officer. The accused have been charged under various sections of the Copyright Act, 1957. Officials said that similar raids have been conducted on other shops and malls in the past by the anti-piracy agencies with the help of the local police, and counterfeit products worth crores have been seized. It has been observed that though these shop owners shut their shops for some time, they re-start after a while, thus giving a setback to the efforts of curbing counterfeiting.

Louis Vuitton fall 2011 menswear handbags Paris Fashion Week

Louis Vuitton sent their fall and winter 2011/2012 menswear collection down the Paris Fashion Week runway yesterday and the collection was filled with red and black ensembles as well as a large collection of handbags for men. Louis Vuitton paired corduroy pants, leather jackets, warm wool coats, chunky knit sweaters and suede gloves with luxurious crocodile clutches, red leather mini-bags and bold red, oversized doctor bags. Louis Vuitton showed classic styles such as the pea coat in what seems to be one of fall 2011’s most prominent colors; red. In addition to red pants, jackets, coats and shirts, Louis Vuitton created red handbags that blurred the lines between structured women’s handbags and men’s carrying cases. The crocodile clutches that the male models carried down the Paris Fashion Week runway featured a wristlet strap and were shown in deep brown and black. The non-exotic leather handbags, such as the mini-bag and oversized doctor bag, were shown in bold and bright red paired with red pea coats, red overcoats and red suiting. The fall/winter 2011/2012 Louis Vuitton catwalk featured one of the largest handbag collections for men to debut on the Paris Fashion Week runway. It should be interesting to see if men carry exotic clutches off the runway and on the city streets in Europe, England and America.

LVMH’s Net Income for Year Soars 73%

Less than two years after the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, indulgence is back in style. Bernard Arnault, creator of LVMH Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, is one of the biggest beneficiaries. Consumers sipped Dom Pérignon Champagne, donned Hublot watches and sported Louis Vuitton handbags in record numbers last year, especially in Asia, driving sales at LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods company, to new heights and sharply lifting profitability. At a news conference on Friday, Mr. Arnault said sales in 2010 rose 19 percent to 20.3 billion euros ($28 billion). Operating profit jumped 29 percent to 4.32 billion euros ($5.9 billion), while net income surged 73 percent to 3 billion euros ($4.1 billion). The group increased its 2010 net dividend to 2.10 euros ($2.89) from 1.65 euros ($2.27). Revenue from fashion and leather goods surged about 20 percent, matching sales from wines and spirits and from retail outlets like Sephora and Duty Free Stores. Watches and jewelry are the company’s least profitable products, though sales of high-end watches skyrocketed last year, a trend that LVMH expects to continue. Demand from the newly affluent, especially in Asia, is driving much of the rebound in the luxury industry after overall sales slumped around 8 percent in 2009, according to research by Bain & Company. As China transforms itself into an economic juggernaut, Chinese shoppers are spending as never before on luxury goods. Sales of expensive trinkets are jumping on the Chinese mainland and in nearby regions like Macao and Taiwan, as well as overseas, where Chinese tourists crowd exclusive boutiques from the Champs-Élysées to Fifth Avenue. Like almost every producer of luxury goods these days, LVMH is betting on even greater growth in China, particularly as the Japanese economy remains in a holding pattern. The company has positioned itself over the years by turning a constellation of names, including Dior, Fendi and Marc Jacobs, into top sellers by cultivating their development and tailoring sales strategies to a range of pocketbooks. While a Guerlain perfume can be found in any duty-free shop, for example, a Louis Vuitton bag can be purchased only at one of the brand’s boutiques, imbuing it with what Mr. Arnault described as an “extraordinarily elitist” quality that makes it a must-have item among the rising ranks of the wealthy. Still missing from the company’s offerings, though, are goods from the fashion house Hermès, in which Mr. Arnault took a stealthy 20 percent stake last year, largely through the use of derivatives. On Friday, Mr. Arnault responded to a barrage of questions about his intentions by declaring that LVMH was “surprised” to find itself a large shareholder in Hermès, a position that he said had been “imposed” on LVMH because of conditions underlying the derivatives contracts. Since the stake was revealed, the Hermès family has reacted bitterly and called on Mr. Arnault to sell, which he said he was not inclined to do. He repeatedly pledged that LVMH would remain a “peaceful” investor in Hermès but said he would nonetheless press to collaborate with the family. On Thursday, Hermès, whose $10,000 Kelly bags and other top-quality leather goods make it an immensely profitable company, said it would pay an interim dividend of 1 euro ($1.37) a share for the first time, after posting a 25.4 percent increase in annual revenue. The family’s 72 shareholders, together with Mr. Arnault, will get almost all of that payout.

Blinged-up Mini has 185kW in the bag

It may look like a handbag on wheels, but there's a serious performance car under the Louis Vuitton-style bling. This John Cooper Works Mini has been completely covered by tuning house CoverEFX with a special leather-textured foil wrap in royal blue, emblazoned with gold monograms not dissimilar to that of the iconic luggage house, and runs on matching matte black and matte gold metallic 17” OZ alloy rims shod with 205/40 rubber. Under the gold-trimmed bonnet CoverEFX has fitted an extra-large sports air filter, a Miltek downpipe and an authoritative 65mm diameter exhaust system with a free-flowing sports catalytic convertor - plus an ECU upgrade that pushes power from 155 to 175kW and torque from 280 to 350Nm. A second-stage tune with even more aggressive ECU software pushes that to 185kW and 382Nm, while a short-shift gearbox kit and stainless-steel KW Variant 3 suspension help get all that muscle down on to the tar. Unless your credit card is the same colour as the logos it's unlikely to survive the conversion process - and neither will the Mini's warranty.
