Dolce & Gabbana sent a 1980’s inspired collection down the Milan Fashion Week runway today and it brought back memories of Molly Ringwald movies, Devo and female power from a time when Supermodels ruled the runways. The handbags on the Dolce & Gabbana runway also brought back not so fond memories of the fanny pack, yes; the fanny pack made an appearance on the Dolce & Gabbana runway, as well as better received handbag styles. The fanny pack, which was mildly popular for a short time in the 1980’s, has become the handbag that no-one would like to admit is part of the handbag family. Although Louis Vuitton created a fanny pack for the status seeking set, the hands-free version of the handbag has stayed away from main-stream store shelves and the closets of Fashionistas everywhere. Dolce & Gabbana have done the unthinkable; they placed the fanny pack on their fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week runway. The fanny pack was shown in exotic skins with luxurious hardware and touches in on-trend colors such as black and bold purple. The fanny packs were loosely tied on the waists of models allowing the bag portion to hang about three inches below the top of the strap which seemed to catch on the opposite hip bone of the models. The fanny packs were shown with long dresses and more elegant styles; not the five years jeans, torn sweatshirt and old tennis shoes one would expect to see on a the owner of a fanny pack. In addition to bringing back a handbag style that most Fashionistas may shun, Dolce & Gabbana showed beautiful daytime clutches and shoulder bags in exotic skins as well as smooth leathers. The color palette was bright and the hardware was bold. The overall handbag collection for fall from Dolce & Gabbana was right on trend and every bit as luxurious as one would expect from the Itlian design duo; the fanny pack remains an enigma.
